Introduction To a Future Pharmacists

Hello bloggers!

My name is Taylor Calvert and I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. My majors are Chemical Biosciences, Pre-Pharmacy and a Spanish minor. The coolest thing about my major is I am learning about the human body everyday. I personally think everyone needs to know more about the human body to properly take care of themselves. The cool thing about having a Spanish minor is being able to communicate with a larger audience. The best class I took last semester is Human Anatomy because I learned so much about the human body hands on. I was grateful to have the opportunity to work on a cadaver, to see what the inside of our bodies really look like.

I absolutely love to cook and to garden in my spare time! Ever since I was a little girl I have always loved flowers. My grandmother and I would always spend time gardening together.

                                           personal photo: grandmothers garden

My favorite flowers are Hibiscus flowers and Roses. Both of these flowers have a wonderful fragrance. Outside of gardening you will catch me in the kitchen cooking up some cajun food.
I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and we are to the cajun food. Cajun food run through my veins! My favorite dishes to cook are Crawfish Etoufee and Shrimp Creole. Both of these dishes take about 30 min to cook which makes it even better to make.

If I had an extra day to do whatever I wanted I would gather my family and friends and we would all go trail riding on horses and listen to country music and dance until the sun goes down and comes up. I love being around family and friends and creating memories. I also love horses so that would put the cherry right on top of the sundae.

  1. I am current in awe of doctors and pharmacists at the current moment, Taylor: I developed a terrible eye inflammation right before school started (uveitis; I had never even heard of it before), and it was seriously scary — but the eye doctor figured out what was wrong, and the pharmacist supplied me with magical eye drops. I am having to take the eye drops for six weeks, which is not fun... but my eye is finally getting better now, and I am so grateful for all the doctors and scientists who made that all possible.

And about flowers: there are so many flowers with folkloric and mythological significance in the Indian tradition. Here's a beautiful webpage you can explore — maybe you will want to do a flower-themed project for the class! Flowers in Indian mythology

  2. Hi Taylor!

I love to garden and cook in my spare time, too! If you are interested in getting some or more plants, there is the yearly OU Botany Club sale held around April and the Flower Power Market in Norman held every second Friday of each month (if farmer Jerry is there). Those are good chances to get some neat, cheap plants! As for cooking, it's so cool that you know how to cook Cajun food! I have always wanted to go out and try more of it.

  3. Hi Taylor,
That's great you have such a high interest in the human body. I also think everybody should know more about, but I am one of the ones who does not. The image of your grandmother's garden looks great and it is very impressive! I also included cooking in my introduction post. I like to think I have mastered steaks and chickens, but maybe I am a little to confident in myself. It was great meeting you and I hope you have an awesome semester!

  4. Hey Taylor! I took human anatomy in high school but i'm sure it's much more harder and informative for you in college than it was for me. It sounds like a lot of fun though. I don't personally like gardening, but my grandmother does and sometimes I help her with minor things like weeding and watering. She does have some plants, but she also grows food. I hope you have an awesome semester.

  5. Hey Taylor, I feel like we have a lot in common! I am a Biochemistry major and I am pre-med. I had thoughts about pharmacy, however, I didn't think I was up for the math in the curriculum. So congrats to you! And I couldn't agree more about being hopeful that some of the general things we learn will become more common knowledge to everyone. In addition, I think its really neat that you're studying Spanish. I also studied Spanish for 3 years, despite being hispanic. I hope that it affords you a lot of opportunities. Also, I think you have really cool interests. I LOVE COOKING AND COUNTRY MUSIC!

  6. Taylor, I think it's great that you are so passionate about your major. All of the people that I know who have some sort of science major are so passionate about what they learn and what they want to do in the future. I also love that you are into gardening. I wish that someone had taught me had to garden when I was younger and lived in a house. Also, cajun food is such an interesting mix of cultures and tastes! I went to New Orleans four years ago, and my boyfriend and best friend and I loved the food so much! I just moved into an apartment and am hoping to learn to cook some great dishes! Best of luck in this course this semester!

  7. Hi, Taylor! That's a really cool major! My roommate is also pre-pharm and she studied so much this summer for the PCAT, which looked horrible compared to my GRE studying. I just started cooking for myself, but I'm not good at it so I would love to get any tips/recipes you have to up my food game! My favorite flower is a peony! I think they're so beautiful and smell amazing. You're day off sounds amazing, I would love to go hiking and travel somewhere beautiful like Canada or Colorado. Good luck with your senior year!

  8. Hi Taylor!

I took Spanish here at OU and really enjoyed it so I am jealous of your Spanish minor! I had a really easy time with any kind of writing and vocabulary, but actually speaking the language was difficult for me! I am also someone who really enjoys cooking! What kind of food do you like cooking? My sister is a vegan, so over the summer I learned how to cook a lot of interesting vegan foods that are actually delicious.

  9. Hey Taylor!
Chemical Biosciences sounds like a tough major, and it's awesome that you're minoring in spanish! I'm also pre-pharmacy, where do you plan to go to pharmacy school?
You're right, human anatomy is such an amazing class. I think everyone deserves the opportunity to really learn and understand how our bodies work (and why it works the way it does).
Riding horses, spending time with friends and family, listening to country music, and making memories seriously sounds like the perfect day off to me too. There's nothing more relaxing and fulfilling than hanging out and riding horses.
Good luck to you this semester and in your future!

  10. Hi, Taylor!

I agree with you that people need to know more about the human body in order to take care of themselves. I learn something new seemingly every day about myself and how I react to things, as well as what I should (and shouldn't) be eating and doing to stay healthy. It makes a lot easier once you figure out how things inside your body work. With that said, I don't think I could work on a cadaver, but I am glad that there are people like you who can so you can pass along all the info that I wouldn't be able to find out for myself.

Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  11. Hi Taylor!

Your major sounds pretty interesting. I am glad that you are enjoying it so much! I also thought about having a Spanish minor for a while but ended up deciding against it. It is interesting that you like Human Anatomy so much because all my friends that have taken it do nothing but complain about it. I imagine it was pretty hard!

  12. Hey Taylor! Wow, I also have a health major (Psych Pre-Med) and I also am minoring in Spanish! Have you taken Medical Spanish? I recently took it and loved learning about different health issues in Hispanic countries, as well as comparing the health problems in the U.S. with other countries. We also learned a lot of vocabulary terms in Spanish that would be helpful in the medical field, so if you haven't taken it already and if you have the time, I would suggest doing that :)

I also think it's super cool that you like gardening! I share your love for flowers as well, I think they are simply amazing. My family likes to garden as well, and our whole house is surrounded by different flowers.

Good luck with everything this semester and with Pharmacy school!

  13. Taylor,

First off I really like your page and the color scheme you picked. Second your major is way out of my league and you sound seriously too smart for me. I love that you have chosen a tough major and commend you for it. I agree with you on the perfect day as well as country music is my weakness. I am mainly a George Strait guy but mostly any country will do. Great job on your into and would love to read more soon.

  14. Hi Taylor! Majoring in two different majors as well as minoring in Spanish is awesome of you! I can definitely agree that learning about the human body is important, I took haven't taken human anatomy yet, and don't quite need to but I plan to one day, just to experience a cadaver and understand the human body more. I tried taking human physiology, but that didn't quite pan out as well as I'd hoped, but I hope to go back and retake it to learn and understand it better. I hope to one day learn more about flowers and garden myself. My dad has the green thumb and grows his own herbs and pepper trees and plenty more, so we can watch them grow and eat them when they're ready. I also LOVE cajun food and crawfish etoufee is definitely one of my favorites to eat. I have to get that any chance I get when we go out to a cajun restaurant! I can also relate with hanging out with family and friends 'til the break of dawn, because nothing beats their love and support! It was great meeting you Taylor, good luck the rest of this semester and so forth!

  15. Hi there Taylor! I love gardening too! I had a pretty varied herb garden this summer, with rosemary, sage, pineapple sage, mint, stevia, catnip, and my favorite, purple basil. It was so nice to have something to tend to and harvest from. It's so cool that you've got such varied major, too. Hopefully you can help a lot of different people with your Spanish minor. And it's so cool to get to learn so much about the human body. It's a fascinating thing.

  16. Hey Taylor! It's so nice to meet you! I have a feeling you'd be pretty appalled at meeting me because I can NOT cook at all and I absolutely hate horses. I've always been a little terrified of them. But I love that you appreciate them and see their beauty because every creature deserves at least that. I wish I could cook, but it's just not one of my talents, so I am very impressed with others who can.

  17. Hey Taylor! I love your blog! Your background is so pretty! It reminds me when of Cancun. The water is so blue and the sand it white and soft. I also love to cook but my favorite is baking. I also love horses too. I have some family that own a ranch and they gave me my horse, Rain, when I was 16 years old. I love riding her but I don't get to visit that often because of school and work. it was nice meeting you!

  18. Hey Taylor,
I also really like learning about the body and its delicate physiology. Indian medicine has really interesting methods to medicine like Unani- If you haven't checked that out, I recommend it. I think it is really amazing how little we still know about the body. The attempts that some of these fold religions make to understand the delicate human physiology are really interesting. Anyways anatomy was one of my lost loves. I took a class in high school and wish I had taken one in college- but my academic career took me a different direction. Well, good luck finishing up the semester, dude!

  19. Working with a cadaver sounds like a "treat" to only a select group of people, so it sounds like you have found the right place in the world. On a slightly ore real note that actually sounds like it would be amazingly fascinating once you get over the whole dead body part. It would be like taking apart a computer to see how it worked, except just a bit more bloody.

  20. Hey Taylor,

I don't know how it is the last week of class and I am just now reading your introduction but somehow that happened! Your major sounds so cool and yet so terrible to me as a letters major. I also think it is really great that you have a spanish minor. If I have one regret it is that I never took spanish and think it would have been a really useful language to learn. I loved getting to read your introduction and look forward to reading some of your stories!

  21. Hey Taylor!

I am also quite surprised that it's the last week of classes and I'm getting to read your introduction! While I am not a science major, I am pre-med, so I have to take a lot of the same classes that you probably do - I understand both the thrills and pains associated with them. I'm also looking forward to taking Human Anatomy at some point, and I think it's super cool how passionate you are about it. I wish you the best of luck with your finals!

  22. Hi Taylor!
It's a little late for it, but it's nice to finally meet you. It sounds like you are incredibly busy and focused. That's really awesome. I'm a little jealous that you're something of an experienced gardener. I want to learn how to grow things, but I think I have a bit of a black thumb...everything just ends up dying. I did manage to grow tomatoes one summer. I didn't get to enjoy very many of them, but the squirrels that live in my yard seemed to think they were delicious. Best of luck in your future and upcoming finals!

  23. Hey, Taylor! I am just finishing up in the Myth & Folklore class and ran into your posts while I was doing extra commenting. I think your majors are awesome and commend you for choosing majors that sound challenging. I took anatomy in high school and found it fascinating and my best friend took cadaver anatomy at OU when he was applying for nursing school. I also love Cajun food and have a few good recipes up my sleeve. Anyway, nice to meet you even if it is the end of the semester!
